The Believed as Believed: The Noematic Dimensions of Faith and Doubt in Religious Experience

Abstract Countless scholars have wrestled with the ambiguities and complexities in determining role of noema Husserl’s theory intentionality since his transcendental turn, consequently converted what was intended to be a structural solution problem into contested itself.1 Shifting emphasis from ‘whatness’, or ontological concerns correlate noesis—noema ‘howness’, methodological force phenomenology, allows me discuss two things. The first is theological. Before Janicaud’s pronouncement ‘theological turn’ thesis has been rejected as means account for certain experiences given differently object-phenomena (Janicaud, 2000). In accounting religious experience complex movement between faith doubt, my work reaches not ‘essence phenomenality’ (Marion), givenness beyond intuition made invisible, nor does it seek describe transcendence immanence, proof existence god/gods, rather itself processes underlying structures belief. Arguably by focusing upon noetic noematic structure intentional acts, analysis revitalised delineating belief modalities doubt experiences.
